Update: Disney to compete with Netflix!

Update March 2018:

Lucasfilm is excited to announce that Emmy-nominated producer and actor Jon Favreau has signed on to executive produce and write a live-action Star Wars series for Disney’s new direct-to-consumer platform. Favreau is no stranger to the Star Wars galaxy having played roles in both the Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series and in the upcoming Solo: A Star Wars Story.

“I couldn’t be more excited about Jon coming on board to produce and write for the new direct-to-consumer platform,” says Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. “Jon brings the perfect mix of producing and writing talent, combined with a fluency in the Star Wars universe. This series will allow Jon the chance to work with a diverse group of writers and directors and give Lucasfilm the opportunity to build a robust talent base.”

Update November 2017 :

Yesterday, during the Walt Disney Company’s earnings conference call, CEO Bob Iger announced their plans to compete with Netflix. Disney will be removing all content from Netflix and will be including it in their new ‘over the top’ service. This new service will have original programming and will include some of their biggest IP’s such as Star Wars, Marvel, and Pixar. Iger did not elaborate what the storylines Star Wars and Marvel would be following. Marvel has already produced hit shows such as Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and many others. An original program surrounding Monster’s Inc. has already been announced. Also included in the service will be all of the great Disney content people have come to love.  Iger also commented that this new service will be priced significantly lower than Netflix.
